How test card numbers work

Test card numbers are valid by the card networks’ checksum but belong to no real account. Each provider recognises its own documented numbers in its sandbox or test mode and makes them behave in a set way: succeed, decline with a given reason, or ask for 3D Secure. They never move money, and they do nothing in live mode.

That is why a random number from a card generator is not a substitute. It may pass a format check, but a sandbox only gives predictable results for the numbers it documents, and Stripe, for example, refuses any other number in test mode.

Providers also differ in where the outcome comes from. Stripe, Paddle, Lemon Squeezy, Polar, Dodo and Razorpay use a different card for each outcome. Braintree uses the transaction amount, Adyen the card holder name, and Mollie an amount plus the status you choose on its test screen.
