What actually happens in the first 90 days of an affiliate program
Setting up takes an afternoon. That part every vendor tells you. What nobody tells you is how long it takes to get a partner, then a click, then a sale, and what it means when one of those does not happen. Below is what our own data says, including the parts that do not flatter us.
3 in 4
Programs that get a first partner have one within the first two days. Of the programs still without one after two days, about one in ten ever gets one.
14 days
Half of the programs that reach a first affiliate sale do so within two weeks of setting up. The other half take longer, sometimes months.
34 of 73
Paying programs on Refgrow that have had at least one affiliate sale. Fewer than half. We do not know of anyone else who publishes this number.
Refgrow production data, September 11, 2026. Medians are among programs that reached the milestone.
Days 1 to 2
The decision point: your first partner
This is the step that decides everything, and it is over faster than people expect. Three in four programs that get a partner have one within the first two days, most of them on day one. Of the programs still without one after two days, about one in ten ever gets one, because the owner has moved on to something else and the program sits there.
The fastest first partners are your own customers. They already use the product and they know people like themselves. If you have a payment provider connected, Refgrow can pull your customer list so you can invite them without exporting anything.
If you have no paying customers yet, stop here. An affiliate program needs something to sell. Come back when you do; the setup will still take an afternoon.
Days 3 to 14
First clicks, and for half of programs, the first sale
A partner who joined and went quiet is the second most common place to stall. They got a link and a dashboard and nothing to actually post, so they posted nothing. One image and two lines of copy in your assets library fixes most of this; partners use what is there and write nothing themselves.
Among the programs that ever make an affiliate sale, half have made it by day 14. Counted from the day an account starts paying us, the median is 10 days. Those programs typically had three partners on the books when it happened, not thirty. Volume is not what gets you the first sale. One partner who actually shares the link is.
Days 15 to 45
Either it compounds, or it is stuck in one of three places
By now the program is in one of four states, and your dashboard tells you which: no partners; partners but no clicks; clicks but no sales; or a first sale recorded. The first three each have a different fix, and the third one is the one worth checking carefully before assuming the offer is bad. In a surprising share of cases sales are happening and the tracking is not closing the loop, so the partner never gets credited and stops.
If a sale has landed, this is the stretch where the second and third arrive, from the same partner or from someone who saw them post. Programs that reach one sale usually reach more. Programs that have not by day 45 need a change, not more waiting.
Days 45 to 90
What waiting does, and does not, do
We measured this because we wanted the answer to be “give it time”. It is not. Among paying programs, the share that has had an affiliate sale barely moves between 30 to 90 days old and past 90 days. A program that has not sold anything through a partner by the end of its first quarter is not late; something in the first two weeks did not happen, and time on its own will not make it happen.
The good news inside that: the whole outcome is decided by things you can see and act on in the first two weeks. Nothing about it is a mystery, and none of it requires waiting a quarter to find out.
What we do during those 90 days
None of this is a promise that you will sell. It is the list of things that exist to move each step, so that none of them stalls for lack of a tool.
Getting the first partner
Invite your customers from your payment provider in a few clicks. Browse the Partner Network, people who registered to promote products like yours, with what they have driven elsewhere shown on their card. Or let the AI recruiter find creators in your niche and draft the approach.
Getting the first click
A partner who has joined and not shared their link within two days gets a starter pack from us: their link, their coupon, the commission terms and three ready-to-post drafts. Your dashboard tells you when partners are on the books and nothing is arriving.
Getting the first sale credited
The dashboard warns when clicks are arriving and no purchase has been recorded, and when purchases are arriving with none credited to a partner, which is the tracking problem that quietly kills programs. When the first affiliate sale lands, you get an email that says so, because it is the milestone that matters.
Knowing where you are
The dashboard shows the milestone itself: first partner, first click, first affiliate sale, which day of the program you are on, and how long it usually takes the programs that get there. The weekly report carries the same line.
What we will not tell you
- That it is passive. The programs that work had an owner who invited people in the first two days and put something in the assets library. That is an afternoon of work, but it is work, and skipping it is the most common reason a program never starts.
- That it works before you have customers. It does not, and we would rather you not pay us to find that out. The trial is for testing the tracking against real purchases, not for waiting to have some.
- That the median is your number. Half of the programs that reach a first sale do it within two weeks. That is half of the ones that reach it, and fewer than half of all paying programs have. We publish both numbers so the first one cannot be read as a promise.
If you have paying customers
Setup is an afternoon, the first partner should be in by day two, and you will know within two weeks whether it is moving. That is a reasonable test for a 7-day free trial, cancel anytime.
