Tiered Affiliate Commission Calculation Examples
Tiered programs increase the rate after an affiliate reaches a threshold. The calculation changes depending on whether the higher rate applies only to new sales or to every sale in the period.

The formula
Incremental tiers: add the payout for each sale at the rate earned when that sale occurs. Retroactive tiers: apply the final earned rate to all qualifying sales in the period.
Worked example
For 12 sales of $100 each, with 10% on sales 1–10 and 15% from sale 11: incremental payout is (10 × $10) + (2 × $15) = $130. If 15% applies retroactively to all 12 sales, payout is 12 × $15 = $180.
Specify the threshold window
A tier needs a measurement window: calendar month, rolling 30 days, quarter, or lifetime approved sales. The same affiliate can qualify in one window and return to the base tier in the next. Define whether pending sales count toward the threshold or only approved sales do.
For transaction-based tiers, record the order in which qualifying sales became eligible. If a refund later removes one sale, the tier may need recalculation. A retroactive structure can cause a larger adjustment because changing the final tier changes the rate on earlier sales too.
Check the effect of variable sale amounts
The simple example uses identical $100 sales. With mixed prices, apply the earned rate to each eligible sale amount. If sale 11 is $200, its incremental payout at 15% is $30, not $15. A tier based on revenue rather than sale count needs a different threshold calculation.
Show affiliates whether the tier is incremental or retroactive and when the period closes. That single distinction explains many apparent payout discrepancies. Use a transaction-level ledger to make the result auditable.
