Percentage vs Flat Affiliate Commissions: Calculate Both

A percentage commission rises with the customer's payment. A flat commission stays the same for each approved sale. To compare them, calculate both payouts on the same eligible sale amount, then check what happens across your price tiers.

For the basic percentage formula and an interactive estimate, start with the affiliate commission calculator.

The formula

Percentage payout = eligible sale amount × rate ÷ 100. Flat payout = approved sales × fixed fee.

Worked example

At 20%, a $50 sale pays $10 and a $200 sale pays $40. A $25 flat fee pays $25 on either sale. The two models meet at a $125 sale because $125 × 20% = $25.

Find the break-even sale price

Divide the flat fee by the percentage rate as a decimal. If the flat fee is $25 and the rate is 20%, $25 ÷ 0.20 = $125. Below $125, the flat fee costs more. Above $125, the percentage costs more. This comparison assumes the same sales qualify under both models.

If your product has several plans, repeat the comparison at each actual payment amount. An annual plan, discount, or upgrade can change the effective amount. The published program terms should say whether the payout uses the first payment, total contract value, or each invoice.

Compare a month's approved sales

Suppose an affiliate brings four $50 sales and two $200 sales. At 20%, the payout is (4 × $10) + (2 × $40) = $120. At $25 per sale, the payout is 6 × $25 = $150. A single average sale price would hide the difference between the two groups, so calculate by transaction or price tier.

Neither model is inherently better. A flat fee makes the cost per approved customer predictable; a percentage follows revenue. Check the result against your gross margin and acquisition budget before setting the rate.

Calculate your own payout
